Homework Expectations and Responsibilities

Homework Expectations

Mrs. O'Connor's Class
Language Arts- Reading

Nightly Reading

1. Read 30 minutes: (Every day)
Students MUST read EVERY NIGHT for a minimum of 30 minutes.  This is a crucial and important responsibility for 6th grade.  When students are reading their "Just Right" leveled books they should read about 30-45 pages in a nightly sitting.  This will help you as a parent gauge their pace and use of reading time.

2. Reader's Notebook Responses: (3-5 times per week)
Students demonstrate their understanding of the mini-lessons and their books by responding in their journals 3-5 per week.  Student will have rubric that outline the specific requirements of this work in the front of the notebooks.

1.  They help show the readers' thinking, and understanding/interpretation of the text.
2.  We use them during our one to one conferring (and small group instruction), and it helps guide our discussions and teaching.
3. They help students grow their thinking and theories.
4.  They help parents have a discussion and become involved with their child's reading progress.Your child will be expected to read at least 30 minutes every night
