High School Letter December 2015

December 21, 2015

 Dear Parents/Guardians,

As the new year approaches, we would like to share with you upcoming events for your eighth grader.  Lewis S. Mills High School will be offering students numerous choices for courses next year. After winter break, Lewis S. Mills School Counselors will be visiting students on January 6th to review courses, credits and other important information about attending high school.

You should have already received a letter of invitation from Lewis S. Mills High School to attend the “Class of 2020 Orientation Program” on January 7, 2016, at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium.  After the presentation, parents and students are encouraged to attend the “Student Academic and Activities Fair” in the gymnasium to learn about extracurricular opportunities.  As a reminder, after completing the course registration sheet, it needs to be turned into Deborah Watson, 8th Grade School Counselor at Har-Bur Middle School, by January 13, 2016. For any student who plans on attending a private, magnet, or vocational high school, he/she will still need to turn in a completed course registration sheet as well.

For those students that applied to either Wamogo or Oliver Wolcott Technical High School, we anticipate that letters of acceptance should be received in early February. As you were already made aware, Region 10 has budgeted 3 seats for the 2016-17 Wamogo program.  Students not accepted to either school will be put on a waitlist and notified by that school of any changes to their admission status.

CREC and Hartford Magnet Schools will be accepting applications through January 29, 2016.  Information and applications to these programs may be found by contacting the Regional School Choice Office in Hartford.  Student enrollment is based on a lottery system and students may be waitlisted if not accepted.  Students applying outside of Region 10 should notify the School Counseling Office and provide a Record Release Form from the applicant school.

We know this is an exciting time for your child! The School Counseling departments are eager to help guide and support your student through this transition process. Should you and your student have any questions, please contact Deborah Watson in the School Counseling Office at 860-673-6163 ext. 17505.

Sincerely,

Kenneth M. Smith                                                                    Deborah Watson
