Homework, Grading & Retake Policy

Homework Policy:

  • Homework is usually assigned daily and is due the following day.
  • Work completion will be checked and missing assignments will be required to be done at L block that day.
  • Late assignments should be turned in as soon as possible.
  • Parents will be notified if students repeatedly do not have their assigned homework completed.

Grading Policy:

  • Grades are calculated on a total point basis, therefore, a straight average can be used to determine final grades.
  • When viewing PowerSchool, a blank or (-) next to an assignment indicates a score that has not yet been recorded. A zero indicates total points earned on an assignment.

Retake Policy:

Hello 6th Grade Science Parents/Guardians,

We are looking forward to a great 20016-2017 school year with our students!  As many of you may have heard, several departments and grades throughout the district are engaging in a “retake” pilot program in particular courses based upon the research shared by nationally renowned presenter, Rick Wormeli.  In addition to adhering to the new homework policy for Region #10, we will be allowing students to “retake” some summative assessments for full credit.  However, students will not have an opportunity to retake every assessment.  We will identify for students which assessments fall under the “retake” umbrella prior to the administration of the assessment.  This will allow a student to demonstrate that, with more time and attention, he or she has been able to learn the material.

For assessments that have a retake option, students must reflect upon the previous assessment and create a short learning plan to assist in mastering the material missed prior to retaking the assessment.  If students are mastering the science standards being assessed, their new score should reflect this learning.  However, in the instance that students score lower on the retake, their grade will be changed to the new retake score.  At this point, the student and teacher will discuss their options for relearning the material.  Creating quality assessments that are aligned to standards takes considerable time, so please be patient with us as we pilot this new approach.  Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have questions.  Our main priority is your child’s growth as a learner and we look forward to the opportunity to try a new instructional strategy that will benefit the whole student.
Thank you for your support,

Retake Guidelines:

To honor a student’s efforts by giving the extra time and attention needed to master the content, we are going to allow for retakes.  To honor your student’s teacher’s time and effort, and to ensure that this opportunity is not taken for granted, we are asking that you follow the guidelines below.

It is the teacher’s discretion whether a retake is appropriate for the assessment.  If a retake is available the teacher reserves the right to make a different version of the assessment, which could be harder than the first one.  Student will also need to have a meeting with the teacher to go over all the work leading up to the assessment and to discuss any re-teaching that might need to happen.

  • Any score of a D or F are required
  • Request to retake must be submitted within 3 days the assignment is returned to student
  • Refusal to complete an assessment, or purposefully marking random/incorrect answers will disqualify you from redoing the assessment

  • Student must fill out the retake form and “make a plan” for relearning the concepts
  • Parents must sign the Retake form
  • Request form must be filled in completely
  • Original assignment must be attached to the retake form
  • You must have a meeting with your teacher prior to the retake
  • You must bring all work from the unit, including the assessment to retake, with you to the meeting with your teacher
  • If your score is lower than the first assessment you will receive the lower score, however, you will be required to meet with your teacher to discuss the results
  • Retakes need to be completed ONE WEEK BEFORE the end of the marking period
  • Grades won’t be changed in Power School until all parts of the retake are completed and handed in
