**Important information regarding the Har-Bur "SWITCHERS" Program for the school year 2016/17**

The link below provides a detailed description and explanation of the program. After-school meetings/rehearsals will begin in early October.

*Please Read*
This year poses a very difficult challenge with regard to our present inventory. Due to the success of the program in prior years (including current use by those students) the type and number of school-owned instruments is extremely limited. Only a handful of students will be able to work on a new low wind or brass instruments this fall. Students will be selected on the basis of interest and final decisions will be determined based upon recommendations from the director(s).

GRADE 6 BAND
NOTICE FOR UPCOMING WRITTEN, SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT

Recently (5/10/17) the following message was sent, to all parents of Grade 6 Band students, via the "Charms" database system:

Good Morning Everyone,
I am writing to inform you of the upcoming cumulative, written assessment that will be happening for all Grade 6 Band members.  The test will take place on Wednesday, May 25, in the HB cafeteria, during normal rehearsal/class time.
Throughout the year I have attempted to administer multiple forms of assessments, touching upon the various, personal learning styles of each student.  This assessment will be in the form of a multiple choice, "CMT/SBAC like" format and is structured to be completed within the forty-plus minute class period.

So, what will be included on this test? - Everything that we have talked about, worked with and represented, in performance, since the beginning of the year.
Your son/daughter has received numerous handouts and review sheets throughout the year.  Many of them include; the Musical Big 6 Review Sheet, Articulation handout, and rhythm sheet exercises - just to name a few.

Specific areas, within each of the Musical Big 6, to include:
Time Signature:  Use and understanding of each the top and bottom numbers of a time signature, recognition of rhythmic patterns and how they fit into each measure, dots and dotted rhythms, basic syncopation, ties and cut time
Key Signature:  The knowledge and use of natural, sharp and flat symbols, accidental markings and the rules associated with them, enharmonics (A# = Bb), etc.
Tempo:  The knowledge of general speed markings within literature such as Moderato, Allegro, Largo, etc.., the understanding of tempo changers such as Ritard and Accelerando, etc..
Dynamics:  The understanding of soft vs. loud dynamic markings and, most importantly, the knowledge and practical use of "cool vs. warm" air in performing various markings.
Road Map:  The knowledge and use of specific markings such as: Repeats, Da Capo al Fine/Coda, Del Segno al Fine/Coda markings.
Articulation:  The understanding of how each not may be spoken through the use of specific markings such as:  Staccato, Legato, Accent and Heavy Accent.  Each student should be able to demonstrate knowledge of the symbol, what each symbol means for the player to do, as well as, the specific spoken syllable used to create the sound though one's instrument.

Over the next two weeks the ensemble will be alternating days with regard to playing instruments (sight-reading and rhythm sheet exercise performance) and the playing of a review game that will greatly assist each student in preparing for this assessment.  As the test approaches I will increase the number of review days accordingly.
Every year one form of this assessment is given to the Grade 6 Band and each time the majority of the students have done quite well on it.  As I told the kids recently, "If you have listened throughout the year, applied these techniques to your performance, actively participate in the review games and brush up on your weaker areas - you all should do extremely well."
Should you have further questions, regarding the upcoming assessment, please feel free to contact me at anytime.  Have a great day!
 With Regards,

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
June 20, 2017

*PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE SECTION*

The links below contain the names of those students selected to the HAR-BUR MIDDLE SCHOOL SYMPHONIC BAND for the 2017/2018 school year.  Please note that every instrumental student is already assigned and will perform in his/her grade specific ensemble (i.e. Grade 7/Grade 8 Band).  Students that have selected Choir or Music Experience, on course selection forms, and/or expressed that he/she was not interested in performing in the Symphonic Band were not considered so as to not take positions away from those that are continuing.

‚ÄčStatement regarding the selection process:
We wish for everyone to understand that the selection process is an extremely detailed procedure; one that carefully considers each and every student.  This year there are close to 215 students interested in being considered for approximately 100 seats in the ensemble.  Please know that Mr. Riccio and I take this process very seriously and it is never our intent to hurt, nor discourage, any student.  We need to make difficult decisions that are in the best interest of both next year's ensemble as well as each individual student in question.

To those selected to the Symphonic Band:
You will soon be receiving a letter, in the mail, detailing instructions regarding the pick up of folders in the H
ar-Bur Main Office.  Please note the dates for pick up and once the folder is attained make sure to follow the enclosed directions and prepare accordingly.  Also, please review the "BLUE" equipment sheet since certain instrument types will need to purchase upgraded accessories such as mouthpieces(clarinet/saxes & brass), mutes (trumpets) and stick bags/mallets (percussion) prior to the beginning of next year.

Best wishes, to everyone, for a happy and restful summer break!
