Course Description:

Classroom experiences in a literate environment will give students the opportunity to use the language arts of reading, writing, speaking, and listening in meaningful ways. Skills will be developed and a love for these arts will be encouraged and nurtured. The expectation is that students will learn and apply the skills needed to become skilled, passionate, habitual, and critical readers, writers, speakers, and listeners.

Student Expectations:

  • Use appropriate strategies before, during, and after reading in order to construct meaning
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of a text’s general content
  • Interpret, analyze, and explain text
  • Connect or associate the text with one’s own life
  • Elaborate on the text and make judgments about the text’s quality and themes
  • Select appropriate independent reading books to broaden their reading repertoire
  • Familiarize themselves with authors of children’s literature and their craft
  • Keep a writer’s notebook
  • Write for various purposes-persuade, inform, entertain, personal expression
  • Apply a process approach to writing
  • Communicate clearly and effectively
  • Participate in discussions, group work, peer conferencing
  • Develop critical thinking skills
  • Expand their knowledge of words for writing, spelling, reading, thinking, and speaking

Multiple Forms of Assessment:

  • Projects with both individual and group responsibilities
  • Writing pieces with specific expectations
  • Performance assessment tasks
  • Participation in active reading on a regular basis
  • Participation in book sharing
  • Response journal entries
  • Self and group evaluations for participation and work quality
  • Conferencing and teacher evaluation
  • A balance of oral, written and hands-on assessment tools

Standards for Assessment:

The work each marking period varies with the units being worked on. Grades will be determined by monitoring a student’s growth towards mastery of grade level standards. Students will be assessed on their willingness to learn and apply the skills needed to become skilled, passionate, habitual, and critical readers, writers, speakers, and listeners.
