8th Grade Chorus

Welcome! I am delighted to be again directing the 8th Grade Choir this year at Har-Bur! We are busy working on numerous things in our chorus rehearsals. The 8th Grade choir will be singing a variety of different songs and will be performing in a winter concert in December, as well as a spring concert usually in early May.  In Chorus, we work on:

  • learning and practicing good posture
  • developing an appreciation for varying styles of music
  • developing proper singing technique
  • solidifying part singing
  • being enthusiastic, respectful, independent singers who contribute to the success of the group.
It is important to me that students not only have fun, but also learn as much as they can in a short amount of time. Students of all learning styles are successful in chorus because of the variety of teaching styles. In 7th and 8th grade, the chorus students are given much more responsibility. Choir members are given copies of their music which they are required to bring to every rehearsal along with a pencil. They also are required to practice outside of school (as homework) using practice sound files located in the Teams area of Office 365.  They have been trained in how to use the program and they can use it both to practice and to document their practice.  If requested, the sound files can also be sent by email.  Choir students will reflect on their own performance on a daily basis in class on their Reflection Log. This will show them what their strengths are, and what areas, if any, they may want to improve. They reflect and evaluate themselves in several areas; participation, conduct, and whether they display role model behaviors. These reflections will be graded as classwork. The grading criteria for this class is as follows:
  • Participation
  • Displays of Husky Traits/Role Model Behaviors (Respect, Responsibility, practice, etc..)
  • Vocal assessments (if applicable)
  • Classwork/Self Reflections
  • Concert Grade (attendance and performance)

Concerts are a very important part of the Chorus experience being that it showcases all of the work the students have put in for the months before. It is, in essence, their final exam.
