Math 7 Course Description

Welcome to Math Class                                                                                   Diamond Team – Grade 7

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to 7th grade!  I am excited about the opportunity to get to know you, and I am looking forward to a productive school year.  This year will be filled with many new learning experiences and exciting activities.  Please remember that success in middle school is tied to being organized and responsible.   It is very important for your child to attend class and be prepared with the proper materials.  The following information will be helpful to your student’s success.

 

Resources:

This year we will be using a new textbook:  Illustrative Mathematics, Kendall Hunt.  Students should bring their textbook to class and, if homework is assigned, bring the textbook home.

7th Grade Math Course Description

This course covers the seventh-grade Common Core State Standards to prepare students for eighth grade math.  There are four critical focus areas.

  1. Developing an understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations
  2. Developing an understanding of proportional relationships, and the types of problems they can utilize to solve
  3. Solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two and three dimensional shapes to solve problems with area, surface area, and volume.
  4. Drawing inferences about populations based on samples.

 

Assessment

 Each student should prepare for assessments of each unit covered.  Preparation for assessments might include reviewing notes, previous quizzes, warm-up exercises, homework, and the textbook.

 

Retake Policy

Retakes are allowed and encouraged for most assessments.  In order to retake an assessment, the following requirements must be met….

  • An assessment that has a grade that does not meet expectations qualifies you for a retake.
  • The student must have completed all required assignments prior to the original assessment.
  • A request to retest form must be filled out and signed by the student and parent/guardian. 
  • The student must complete correction of the original assessment and have their corrections verified.
  • Student must schedule a time to meet where they show evidence that they have completed the study plan that they created.
  • Students must come prepared to retake the assessment on the agreed upon date. 
  • Retakes are allowed up until the final week of the marking period, and all retakes are subject to the teacher’s discretion.

 

Homework

Homework is by far one of the most important things a student can do to affect and improve his/her math grade.  Students need to copy homework assignments in their planner each day in class.  Homework will be assigned on a regular basis in order for students to practice skills covered in class.  Homework is expected to be done conscientiously and on time.

 

Absences

If your child misses a class, it is his/her responsibility to obtain and complete any missed assignments (class work and homework). Most days, a student can find the class notes on One Note.   Work should be completed with in one week of the absence.   If a student has missed class due to band lessons, all work should be done by the next class. 

 

Class Expectations

  1. Respect the rights and property of others.
  2. Be prompt (on time and in your seat)
  3. Come to class prepared (book, notes, pencil, etc.)
  4. Follow directions
  5. Adhere to the Social Contract
  6. Be an active learner (contribute to class discussions, answer questions when asked and ask questions when you don’t understand)
  7. Be positive (attitude is a LITTLE thing that makes a BIG difference)
