Mrs. Geissler's Bio

This is my 9th year teaching at Har-Bur and I'm excited to be teaching 5th grade!! I have taught 6th, 5th, 4th, and 3rd grade in Region 10. Prior to Region 10, I taught 3rd grade at Norfeldt School in West Hartford for one year. I have had the honor and privilige of being recognized as Region 10 Teacher of the Year for the 2014-2015 school year.

I began my teaching career in 1989 as a fifth grade teacher in Oxford, CT, where I taught for 8 years. During my time in Oxford, I received my Master’s degree in School Psychology from Southern CT State University. I was pursuing my 6th year degree in administration at Central Connecticut State University, however, I'm taking some time off as I enjoy teaching way too much!

You may have noticed that there is a gap in time between my years at Oxford and my time in West Hartford. Between 1997 and 2005, I took a break from my teaching career to raise my 3 sons: John, Andrew, and Matthew. John is a Senior at West Virginia University and is studying journalism (Go Mountaineers!!). He just made the Dean's List for the Spring Semester. Andrew will be a Sophomore at West Virginia University (yes, another Mountaineer). He is a Secondary Education major studying history (I guess he takes after me). Matthew is a Junior at Lewis Mills. Matthew is on the Unified Sports team, Basketball team, Volleyball team and many clubs.

I live in Burlington with my three boys (though we are down to only 1 for most of the year) and my husband, Stephen. Stephen is an attorney who works out of our home and is able to spend a lot of time with the boys. Our family also includes a Springer Spaniel named Bubba.

I am a big fan of Bruce Springsteen and was fortunate enough to have seen him in concert 12 times. He is an awesome performer! I'll be sure to tell you all about my concert experiences...I am so excited!!!! I also enjoy dancing and danced throughout my childhood. I taught dance for 20 years to children and adults. I enjoyed sharing my love of dance just like I enjoy sharing my love of learning. Running and lifting weights are also some of my other favorite activities.

My favorite football teams are the Miami Dolphins and the NY Giants. My favorite baseball team is the NY Yankees. I also enjoy cheering on the UCONN Huskies and the West Virginia Mountaineers.

In case you couldn't tell...I absolutely adore reading!!! I lost track of how many books I read this summer, but I'm think around 20. A few on my list are Rebound by Kwame Alexander, Pashmina by Nidhi Chanani, Amal Unbound by Aisha Saeed, Lions and Liars by Kate Beasley, and Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes. I also love writing and I have many great stories to share with you this year. I can't wait to hear about all the books you have read and the many great adventures you have had!

I know we are going to have a great time together this school year. We are going to work hard and learn a lot, but we are also going to have fun!

This past summer we spent a week in Aberdeen, Maryland watching Matthew and his team, the Burlington Bulldogs, make it to the championship game. They lost 5-2 against Virginia, but they played awesome and most importantly, they had FUN!!!!
