My name is Mrs. Lisa Melingonis and I teach sixth grade social studies on the Emerald team at Har-Bur Middle School. I have been teaching in Region 10 since 2004, most of which was spent as a fifth grade teacher. I am looking forward to a great year in sixth grade!

In sixth grade, students will explore the development of ancient civilizations in Asia, Africa and Europe. Their course of study will provide them with the major themes of history and social science concepts necessary to gain a cultural perspective of the world. Students will be encouraged to discover how people lived in the ancient times, and how their descendants live in these present times, and to inquire into the impact these cultures have had on their own lives and origins. New to this school year's Social Studies curriculum is a focus on geography of the regions of the world and a modern-day view of these regions. This year's Social Studies curriculum also focuses on geography and culture of regions of the world and a modern-day view of these regions. Students will spend a significant amount of time developing Inquiry skills, including developing questions, gathering relevant information and identifying evidence to support their thinking and constructing explanations with reasoning, details, and supporting specific evidence.
